Politics and ethics, why are we even talking about them on the same occasion? Do they even intersect? Is it a very far-fetched approach that is unnecessary and time-wasting, or are we running away from something?
Ethics are not only a bunch of concepts, but they are also what let you be you and be respected as a full, one-unit human being. On the other hand, politics are very distinct from policies in the English language. Politics is about the competition to come up with better policies to serve the community as a whole, person by person, and not just as a group of people.
Politicians have a moral obligation to protect the well-being of their citizens and the environment; so, neglecting public services, mismanaging resources, and not caring for environmental issues demonstrates failure to uphold this duty. This is how this principle highlights the responsibility of politicians to prioritize the health and safety of the population, and none of that is valid unless all citizens are treated equally, regardless of their background or political affiliations. This goes in opposition to all the discrimination engraved in the brains of our population, which really questions our respect for inclusivity and diversity that we tend to not care about, because these are “foreign concepts that NGOs work on for people with a handicap,” not fundamental social values that should shape any human being on this planet!
All of the above brings us to honesty, and by that, integrity: corruption and manipulation of information often lead to wiping away every bit of the community’s trust in the parliament and, by that, the government. Also leading to disregarding transparency and accountability and fueling more and more corruption by the big “Abuse of Power” monster.
Political decisions should prioritize the collective good of society over individual interests and advocate for social responsibility. But why am I telling you all this theoretical, subjective nonsense? Why are you concerned? Why would you even care?
Because even if you are not a politician, you are society, you elect deputies, you are part of the public’s opinion, you agree every day on the social contract that you live in, and you influence everyone around you. Building yourself all your life, to serve yourself, will turn out to be meaningless eventually, and the sooner you realize that you are here to interact with your surroundings and have a positive impact on your life and your entourage, the easier your life will be, the more honest your life will be, more fair, more just, and more fulfilling. You are the social leader of tomorrow, you matter, and you impact. Choose your identity wisely.
