Extrinsic primary tooth staining due to iron syrup medication: effects of dilution and toothbrushing - an in vitro study

Description :

The purpose of this study is to assess in vitro the extrinsic staining ability of iron syrups prescribed to children aged under three years old when administered in concentrated form and when diluted with water, in order to help prevent the unaesthetic black staining caused by the iron syrups. Moreover, the effects of tooth brushing will be studied as well to assess if it can further contribute to the prevention of the extrinsic black staining due to iron syrups. The sample consists of X (to be determined) randomly collected extracted or exfoliated primary anterior teeth with intact crowns, the extraction of which was not performed for the study’s purposes, and the use of which for the purposes of this study will be allowed by consent of the parents of the children from whom they were exfoliated or extracted. The teeth will be randomly divided into six groups and will be immersed in different solutions placed in an incubator (with or without iron syrup, diluted or undiluted iron syrup, with or without tooth brushing). The extrinsic staining will be tested using a spectrophotometer.
