Emissions in the East Mediterranean: the case of Lebanon (EMeLeb)

The East Mediterranean Basin acts as a receptor of anthropogenic emissions from Eastern Europe, surrounding costal urban areas, Sahara, and Arabic deserts. Emissions have downward trends in the US and Europe, whereas in developing countries, pollutant emissions have been growing strongly, especially the Middle East. Emissions inventories are of crucial importance when it comes to air quality and heath effect, policy making and abatement strategies. The only available emissions inventory in Lebanon suitable for air quality was established by Waked et al. from EMMA laboratory (FS-USJ) for the year 2010. Many changes at the regional and national levels occurred since that have increased the emissions drastically and detailed emissions inventories for different years are crucial to set policies and strategies to minimize the impact of air quality on health and help prioritize sectors for which mitigation is imminent. The project proposes to establish gridded emissions inventories from 2010 to 2016, assess sectors contribution to national emissions, establish a more detailed characterization of the emissions from the transport sector, and assess Syrian refugees emissions.
