COMPOSITION
In 2016, Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) unveiled a renewed visual identity, embodied in its logo. The design features two key elements: the acronym “USJ” in bold capital letters, and a square containing a graphic of the century-old banyan tree from the botanical garden at the Campus of Medical Sciences.
SYMBOLISM
The tree featured in this logo reflects the University’s mission. It represents an institution shaped by time, grounded in a strong identity, enriched by academic excellence, rooted in Lebanon’s socio-cultural heritage, and dedicated to the advancement of higher education.
The trunk carries layered meaning:
- Academic rigor at USJ
- The collective sense of belonging centered on USJ
- The unity and creativity of the individuals the University seeks to form
- The breadth of disciplines and campuses
- The diversity of academic fields and research centers
- Deep roots firmly anchored in Beirut, the capital.
The aerial roots represent the academic, socio-cultural, and political pluralism that the University proudly upholds.
The trunk ascends with purpose, symbolizing growth and aspiration, while USJ students and its 100,000 alumni, nurtured to serve, act as catalysts for social transformation and progress.
