Selim Abou was born in 1928 in Beirut, Lebanon.
In 1946, he joined the Society of Jesus in France, where he pursued studies in literature, philosophy, and theology. He earned a PhD in Humanities in 1961. 
Following the closure of the School of Humanities, he founded the Faculty of Humanities at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) in 1977, serving as its Dean until 1992. From 1995 to 2003, he was Rector of USJ.
Between June 1993 and February 1999, he coordinated the “Cultures, Languages, and Development” network of AUPELF/UREF. He also served as Director of USJ Publications and held the Chair Louis D. Institut de France of Intercultural Anthropology.
Selim Abou’s research focuses on the intersection of cultures worldwide, acculturation processes and identity conflicts, multiculturalism, and citizenship.
