The Joy of Christmas Spread at The Lebanese Autism Society (LAS).

On the 26th of December 2024, the Inclusion Club of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) planned and executed various interactive activities at the Lebanese Autism Society (LAS) located in Sacré-Coeur, Gemmayzeh.

The USJ Inclusion Club was founded to spread awareness about the true meaning of inclusion in society and throughout the University’s community.

Inclusion means “the idea that everyone should be able to use the same facilities, take part in the same activities, and enjoy the same experiences, including people who have a disability or other disadvantage” (Cambridge Dictionary). Through its various events, the club has effectively promoted the idea that every person has the right to take part in their community and pursue the education of their dreams.

It is also important to highlight the big role of LAS. This initiative advocates for the rights of people with autism and provides them and their families with the necessary support. LAS operates two branches: one in Baabda and another in Gemmayzeh.

In their last event, the Inclusion Club of USJ prepared a series of activities for children and adolescents at LAS. They offered adapted activities and carefully considered their interactions with each person. The games were simple, ensuring that most of the children and adolescents were able to participate with them. Activities included: “Pass Me the Ball,” ice-breaking exercises, dancing, singing, and more.

One of the most notable aspects of the event was the attention to small details by the seven club members who were present. The music volume was kept low to avoid discomfort, the number of club members was also limited to prevent overwhelming the participants, and all proposed activities took account of the adaptations needed there. Donated cookies were also distributed to the students!

Such student-led events make us feel more responsible, as members of this world, to make sure that everyone has the right to live a fulfilling life, regardless of their personal or educational needs. Each person should have, unconditionally, the right to feel included in society.

It is our responsibility to ensure an environment that promotes this inclusion and to do our best to help everyone understand the true meaning of inclusion and apply it daily.

In conclusion, this project organized by the Inclusion Club of USJ was an important reminder of the importance of spreading joy whenever the chance is present, to help all the people around us.
