Poetry: Where Mortality Meets Eternity

Leonardo da Vinci did not miss when he said, "Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen." In fact, poetry is an artistic manner used to project one’s interior. In the course of history, poets have used their quills and pens to express their emotional, intellectual, and even political perspectives through pages of sophisticated rhythmical compositions.

Over the centuries, poetry has witnessed continuous change in style and form. However, throughout all its eras, it conserved one of its most valuable criteria: immortality. For instance, Shakespeare’s poetry sonnets have been a part of academic curricula all around the world since the early eighteenth century and will continue to be taught to the generations to come. Thus, mortals can conceive an immortal version of their minds, where they impart their sentiments and reflections, from the bright and blissful thoughts to the darker and more sorrowful ones, through graceful rhymes and oceans of metaphors. In this fashion, their voice becomes imperishable, and their individuality runs eternal, unbroken by the passage of time.

Moreover, poetry is not limited by traditional collections of poems, whereas musical lyricism is also perceived as one of its forms. As a present-day example, Taylor Swift is a singer-songwriter famed for her distinguished lyrical skills. Whether one admires her or not, it is undeniable that Swift proved her poetic lyricism talents in a handful of her albums. Thus, her prolifically noble pen sets up her discography as one of the most outstanding in the music industry.

Whether it is through written verses or melodic lines, these compositions’ primary purpose is to trigger the audience to evoke reflection, reignite passion and motivation, and build empathy by creating a sense of connection with the lyricist or even with other fellow consumers. Thereupon, poetry serves as a source of inspiration to embrace one’s individuality and to reach a determined aim, such as social justice and equality. To further elaborate on the example mentioned earlier, Swift tackles a plethora of social issues throughout her discography, which is the case in her song “Mad Woman”, where she sheds light on how women in society are often shamed for speaking up and defending themselves.

Concisely, poetry is a perennial way to voice thoughts, emotions, opinions, and beliefs through artistically pleasing rhythmical verses that swiftly find their way to the audience’s sentimentality. Therefore, despite all the horridness in the world, we must continue to consume and create art as a form of resistance to eternally defend our cause.
