samer Ghamroun holds a PhD in Sociology of Law from the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan, where he worked on the competition between Islamic courts and civil courts in Lebanon, around child protection and women's rights. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut, where he teaches sociology and legal history, political economy and constitutional law, as well as fundamental rights and fair trial theories. His publications touch on the relationship between law, politics and society, on topics ranging from religious legal systems governing family rights, to legal pluralism and the sociology of the state in the Middle East. His research also focuses on the transformations of the legal professions and the relationship between justice and politics in Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt. Since 2010, Samer has contributed to the effort to create the Legal Agendaa socio-legal activist research center based in Beirut and Tunis. He held several research responsibilities and chaired its Board of Directors between 2014 and 2018, and served until 2020. He is currently in charge of developing the socio-legal research capacity of the Legal Agenda, in order to use the humanities and social sciences to better understand legal and judicial practices and institutions in Arab countries.
