Richard Maroun Elected President of the AUF Scientific Council
Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) has once again been recognized for its academic and scientific expertise. Prof. Richard Maroun, USJ’s Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, has been elected by a large majority as President of the Scientific Council of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). He will now lead one of the Agency’s key bodies, which plays an important role in shaping its scientific priorities and program evaluation policies.
Prof. Maroun will chair a Council of 20 international experts representing AUF’s ten regional directorates, selected for their scientific expertise and experience in university governance and research. In his new role, he aims to strengthen the Council’s strategic role and collective approach, draw on the expertise of its members, and highlight the contributions of every region. This position will allow him to put his experience to work in the major discussions shaping the future of the Francophone scientific community.
This election recognizes Prof. Maroun’s longstanding commitment to academic cooperation within the Francophone community. As Honorary Dean of the Faculty of Science, former USJ Vice-Rector for Research, and Chair of the Research Commission of the Conference of Rectors of the Middle East (C2R) from 2024 to 2026, Prof. Maroun has built a wealth of experience that he now brings to a broader international stage. As President of the AUF Scientific Council, he will draw on this experience to serve a Francophone scientific community shaped and enriched by its regional diversity. His election also ensures that USJ’s expertise and the voice of a region deeply committed to the future of the Francophone scientific community are heard at the highest levels of the AUF’s scientific discussions.
