Valorization of Lebanese Industrial byproducts by the extraction of polyphenols, essential oils and pectins using emerging technologies

Industrial waste management is a major international environmental issue. Scientists are orienting their research towards the recovery of valuable molecules from industrial wastes. In Lebanon, tons of industrial organic wastes are produced, mainly resulting from the winemaking process (such as grape pomace and vine shoots), from citrus and apple juice industries (peels and pulps). These wastes are poorly exploited. This project is dedicated to the intensification of polyphenols, essential oils and pectins extraction from Lebanese industrial by-products using innovative and emerging GREEN technologies such as Intensification of Vaporization by Decompression to Vacuum (IVDV), High Voltage Electrical Discharges (HVED), Pulsed Electric Fields (PEF) and Ultrasound (US). The exploitation of grape pomace, vine shoots, citrus and apple peels as a source of valuable molecules is likely to heighten their economic interest and to reduce their negative environmental impact. This work suggests a long lasting solution that contributes in the sustainable development.
