Mission
The Training Academy for Citizenship (AFC-USJ) is committed to supporting students at Saint Joseph University of Beirut in developing a conscious, courageous, and collective citizenship. Through its University Diploma in Civic Engagement and Citizen Initiative, AFC provides a space where students learn to reflect on the Lebanese context with purpose and responsibility, to engage in dialogue across different perspectives, and to cultivate an ethical, critical, and responsible understanding of the country’s social realities.
The program combines academic learning, practical workshops, and civic projects designed and led by the students themselves. This approach enables participants to explore citizenship through hands-on experiences, including fieldwork, observation, collaboration, and the development of initiatives such as Sawa Seniors, Identité et citoyenneté, Souk el Muwâten, and other projects as well. The objective is to equip the youth with tools to analyze, understand, question, and propose solutions with nuance, critical thinking, and a strong sense of responsibility.
In a country where civic issues can be sensitive, AFC is committed to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for dialogue, where diverse backgrounds and viewpoints are viewed as a source of enrichment. It encourages listening, collective reflection, and the courage to express, with diplomacy, rigor, and discernment, the ideas and questions that must be considered in order to imagine realistic and constructive forms of engagement.
By educating students capable of combining consciousness, courage, and a commitment to the collective good. AFC seeks to nurture a generation that can contribute, each at their own level, to transforming their environment, strengthening social cohesion, and seeking solutions adapted to the challenges facing the current Lebanese context.
