This book offers a critical edition and English translation of The Book of the Demonstration of the Correctness of the Faith (Kitāb al-burhān ʿalā ṣaḥīḥ al-īmān), written by Elias, the East Syrian (Nestorian) Metropolitan of Nisibis (975-1046 AD). In this work, Elias presents the identity of his Church, the Church of the East, from doctrinal, historical, liturgical, and ethical perspectives. His goal is to distinguish his Church from other Christian churches and communities in the Abbasid Caliphate and beyond, mainly the Miaphysites (Jacobites) and Chalcedonians (Melkites). Additionally, he provides both direct and indirect apologetic material in response to Muslim and Jewish accusations against Christians. The Book of Demonstration is divided into four sections, each containing several chapters, arranged according to a specific logic employed by the author. Elias begins with the doctrine of the Trinity, proceeds to expound upon Christology, delves into various Christian (mainly East Syriac) virtues and duties, and concludes with discussions on liturgical and ecclesiological topics pertinent to his Church. In the volume’s first part, the editor, Bishara Ebeid, presents the life of Elias within its historical context and offers an analysis of the authenticity and authorship of the work and its contents. The second part contains the edition of the Arabic text and its English translation, accompanied by insightful comments and annotations. The third part encompasses a lexicon, indexes, and bibliography.
