This course provides the students with a theoretical and practical understanding of energy-related disputes and their resolution. A special focus is placed on disputes encountered in the international energy sector, including in particular disputes arising from the regional and international oil and gas business as well as those related to the infrastructure of both the regional and international energy sector. The course examines the general principles governing the conflict of laws in private international law and aims at providing the students with a rigorous overview of international arbitration, which has become the default means of settling cross-border commercial and investment disputes in the international energy sector. The course covers both procedural and substantive law aspects of arbitration from both an international and a local perspective. The course also deals with the specific nature of international energy disputes, including investor-State and commercial disputes in the energy sector, as well as procedural issues in international energy arbitration.
