It focuses on difficulties related to speech, oral and written language, voice, fluency, the orofacial area, and swallowing, which may arise from developmental, neurological, genetic, sensory, or other disorders.

The speech and language therapy program at the Higher Institute of Speech and Language Therapy is offered in English or in French, combining theoretical instruction with hands-on practice. The program is structured around three main areas (8 semesters, 240 credits ECTS in total):

  • Medical: Fundamental knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the brain and orofacial structures, along with diagnostic techniques.
  • Linguistic and Psychological Foundations: Topics such as linguistics, phonetics, phonology, syntax, and psychology.
  • Specialized teaching units: Assessment and intervention approaches tailored to various pathologies.

From the very first year, students gain practical experience through internships in various settings, including schools, daycare centers, private speech therapy clinics, specialized institutions, and hospitals. Research is also a key component of the program, encouraging students to contribute to scientific advancements in the field.

Upon graduation, speech and language therapists can work in private clinics, specialized schools, healthcare institutions, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and educational establishments. They can also pursue a master’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy at the Higher Institute of Speech and Language Therapy, USJ, Beirut.

The AUF Dolla Karam Sarkis Prize was awarded to two researchers from the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) during an official ceremony held at the Centre d’employabilité francophone de Beyrouth (CEF) on the 11th of February.

In its first edition, the AUF Dolla Karam Sarkis Prize honored two young researchers from Saint Joseph University of Beirut: Dr. Alain Chebli, a professor-researcher in genetics at the Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Rania Kassir, a researcher affiliated with the neuroscience research laboratory at the same Faculty. Each of them received a prize of 5,000 euros during a ceremony held on the 11th of February, at the “Centre d’employabilité francophone de Beyrouth” (CEF).

Dr. Alain Chebli, whose research explores "the epigenetic mechanisms responsible for the activation of telomerase, an enzyme involved in the majority of cancers," explained that his study "aims to better understand the molecular and biological foundations of chronic lymphocytic leukemia to improve its diagnosis, improve prognostics, and open the way for new therapeutic approaches, thus contributing to better patient care."

Dr. Rania Kassir focused her study on the interaction between bilingualism and executive functions in patients with cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and strokes. "My goal today is to keep on developing adapted tests and a set of tools that do not yet exist in Lebanon, which will allow us to diagnose all cognitive disorders related to dementia in the bilingual Lebanese population."

Alain Chebli holds a bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Analysis from the School of Medical Lab Technicians (ETLAM) at USJ, obtained in 2011, followed by a master's degree in Medical Laboratory Analysis from ETLAM in 2012. In 2014, he earned a master of research in health biology, specializing in medical genetics, from the Faculty of Medicine (FM). He then completed his PhD in Biological and Medical Sciences, specializing in Health Management and Policies, in 2021. Finally, in 2023, he obtained a UD in Health Information Analysis from the Higher Institute of Public Health (ISSP).

Rania Kassir, a graduate in Speech and Language Therapy from the Higher Institute of Speech and Language Therapy (ISO) at USJ in 2016, also earned her PhD in Biological and Medical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine in 2024.
