The course will tackle hands on, the history of humanitarian work going back to early 19th century, up to 1979, and arriving to this day; Briefly, we would go through major humanitarian crisis, such as Biafra, Haiti, Syria, Afghanistan, Cambodia, all the way to Ebola, COVID and Ukraine crisis [to pick and choose from those]. In the core essence of the course, we will visit different organizational structures, and explore organizational cultures of UN agencies, Anglo-Saxon INGOS and continental INGOs (mainly French), then we would go through different functions inside humanitarian agencies, (HR, Logistics and Security, Operations, Grants, MEAL) and we would learn how to write proposals, log frames, establish general/specific objectives, monitoring schemes, create advocacy strategies, and reporting; And finally, we would explore what are the basic principles of launching and managing a humanitarian intervention in the scope of a major crisis.
