Adib Moukarzel is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the State University of New York, where he has also served as Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. In September 1999, Dr. Moukarzel returned to his native country, Lebanon, where he is on staff at the Hotel Dieu De France Hospital, the teaching hospital of Saint Joseph University, in Beirut. He is Professor of Pediatrics at Saint Joseph University. A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Dr. Moukarzel is also a member, among other associations, of the American Medical Association, the American College of Nutrition, the American Institute of Nutrition, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, the Society for International Nutrition Research, the International Electrogastrography Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a manuscript reviewer for several journals, including Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatrics, International Pediatrics, Journal of the American College of Nutrition, and Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. In addition, he is on the editorial boards of Journal of the American College of Nutrition, International Pediatrics, and Lebanese Medical Journal. He has received more than 30 research grants. His main research interests are in the areas of gastrointestinal manometry, electrogastrography, ano-rectal biofeedback, therapeutic endoscopy, liver transplantation, obesity, and failure to thrive. In addition, he is known for his work in trace minerals and parenteral nutrition. Dr. Moukarzel is a regular lecturer at the annual meeting of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He has given over 100 invited lectures and presentations and has authored over 70 publications ((Quotation 3105 Hirsh-index 27, i10-index 39. (Google Scholar, December 2023)). Dr. Moukarzel received his MD from the French Faculty of Medicine in Beirut. He began his residency in pediatrics in Beirut and completed it in Paris. After serving 4 years in the division of pediatric GI, first at Necker Enfants Malades and then at Bretonneau/Robert Debré, he completed a second residency, followed by a fellowship in pediatric GI, hepatology, and nutrition at the University of California in Los Angeles, California. After joining the faculty at UCLA, he moved to New York in 1992, becoming one of the youngest directors of a division of Pediatric GI in the United States. In addition to his French CES in pediatrics, Dr. Moukarzel is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Pediatric Gastroenterology, and the American Board of Nutrition. In Lebanon, he works as a consultant in pediatric hepatology, gastroenterology, and nutrition. He has been the chairman of the department of Pediatrics at Hotel Dieu De France, Saint Joseph University Hospital, Beirut from January 2019, till September 2022. Internationally, he is currently the Vice president of the Pediatric GI, Hepatology, and Nutrition Arab Board Fellowship Committee of the Arab Council for Health Specialties (The Arab League, Council of Arab Health Ministers, The Arab Board of Health Specializations) (2023 – present). In 2012, based on the research and publications of Dr. A. Moukarzel, the American society for enteral and parenteral nutrition, A.S.P.E.N “recommended that the daily dose of chromium in parenteral nutrition be reduced to the levels recommended by Moukarzel”*. *Multivitamin and Multi and Trace Element Products, A.S.P.E.N. In 2024, based on his research while in Lebanon (contribution to an international randomized trial), the FDA approved the use of Maralixibat for children having progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC).
