Hadi Y. Kanaan est titulaire du diplôme d'ingénieur en électromécanique de l'Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ), du diplôme de doctorat en génie électrique de l'École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS), Montréal, Canada, et de l'Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) de l'Université de Cergy-Pontoise, Paris, France, en 1991, 2002 et 2009 respectivement. Il est actuellement professeur titulaire, chef du département des études supérieures à l'Ecole Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Beyrouth (ESIB) et directeur de l'École Doctorale des Sciences, de l'Ingénierie et de la Technologie de l'USJ qu'il a rejoint en 2001. Il est également professeur associé à l'ETS, Canada, depuis 2021, et membre associé de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en conversion d'énergie et électronique de puissance depuis 2001. Ses intérêts de recherche portent sur la modélisation et la commande des convertisseurs autonomes, les redresseurs non-polluants, la correction du facteur de puissance, les filtres actifs et la connectivité au réseau des systèmes d’énergie renouvelable. Il est l'auteur d'un livre, de 3 chapitres de livre, d'un brevet et de plus de 275 papiers scientifiques publiés dans des revues et conférences internationales. Il a été rédacteur associé de l'IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, et il est actuellement rédacteur associé de l'IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics (JESTIE). Il est membre de l'AdCom de l'IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), président de la section IEEE Liban et membre de l'IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), de l'IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), de l'IEEE Education. Society, et du comité de la médaille d'honneur IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. pour l'éducation. Il est lauréat du Prix d'excellence en recherche decerné par le CNRS-L en 2016, et du prix IEEE-IES Bimal Bose en 2023 pour sa contribution à la modélisation et la commande des convertisseurs électroniques de puissance pour les applications de qualité d'énergie et d'énergies renouvelables. Il est membre de l'Ordre des Ingénieurs et Architectes de Beyrouth depuis 1992.
