With a background in
English langauge, literature and applied linguistics, Shaké Majarian has been
teaching English at Saint Joseph University of Beirut since August 1993. In
1998, she started teaching English language and literature as a fulltime
faculty at the School of Translators and Interpreters along with maintaining
English language instruction at university at large. She was appointed as the
Head of English Department from 2003 to 2012 during which she collaborated with
Georgetown University, Washington D.C., USA to cater for the department needs, study
curriculum needs, further materials developments and run hands-on TEFL
workshops for potential candidates. In August 2003, she was trained and
certified as the Georgetown Proficiency Test Administrator to run in-service
tests at USJ.
From 2012 to 2014, she
was assigned as Language
Coordinator in the Regional Centers at the Faculty of Languages. Further to
that, from 2013 to 2015 she held the position of Communications and
Publications Officer at Faculty of Languages. In addition to her
administrative responsibilities, Shaké remained actively engaged in the
classroom, teaching advanced English and literature courses. Her passion for
literature and language inspired her students to explore literary works from
diverse cultures and time periods, enriching their understanding of global
perspectives. Since 2015, she has
still been teaching a plethora of courses such as Proficiency level English,
English Literature, Advanced Writing, Language and Culture, Business
Correspondene, Current Issues as well as Ethical Issues.
Outside academia, Shaké volunteers her time and
skills to design and deliver language courses (in English, Armenian and
Turkish) tailored to the needs of diverse learners, including refugees,
immigrants, and local community members seeking to enhance their language
proficiency. She emphasizes communicative approaches that prioritize practical
language skills, enabling participants to engage more effectively in their
daily lives and professional endeavors. Through her work with NGOs, Shaké
facilitates language workshops that not only teach grammar and vocabulary but
also promote cross-cultural understanding and empathy. She integrates cultural
insights and real-life scenarios into her lessons, encouraging participants to
appreciate linguistic diversity and celebrate shared humanity.
