Dr Charbel Chalouhi (FM, 2010), a urologic surgeon, performed the first kidney auto transplant using robotic surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. During the procedure, the patient’s left kidney was removed and was retransplanted and repositioned. The 11-hour surgery allowed the patient to leave the hospital four days later, resuming a normal life, free of complications. Charbel Chalouhi obtained a Medical Doctor Diploma from the Faculty of Medicine of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) in 2010, followed by a Specialization Diploma in Urology from the same faculty in 2014. He then specialized in robotic surgery at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. To top it all, he earned a Master in Biological and Medical Sciences - concentration: Physiology and Physiopathology in 2021 from the USJ Faculty of Medicine. Charbel decided to return to Lebanon in 2017, encouraged to come back by his father, who is also a doctor and founder of the field of Urology in Lebanon, and began practicing at HDF as a transplant surgeon. In 2019, the Montefiore-Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York asked him to join its robotic transplantation project. Since then, he has traveled there every five weeks, achieving a groundbreaking milestone that became the cornerstone of the program. Additionally, Charbel serves as a lecturer and international coordinator at USJ. Testimonial taken from the website: Alumni USJ
