The Oriental Library celebrates
its 150th anniversary

31st of October 2024

An exceptional event took place on the 31st of October 2024: the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Oriental Library, a pillar of knowledge and academic research in Lebanon and in the Arab world. Graced with the presence of Pr. Salim Daccache, s.j, Rector of Saint Joseph University of Beirut USJ, Rev. Fr. Provincial Michael Zammit, S.J., the Director of the Oriental Library, Dr. Joseph Rustom, as well as Vice-Rectors, Deans, Directors, donors, researchers, and friends of the Oriental Library, this ceremony was the perfect occasion to reflect on the Library's fascinating history, to highlight the importance of its collections, and to pay tribute to those who contributed to its success.

Pr Salim Daccache s.j. honored the legacy of the Oriental Library, that is celebrating a century and a half of knowledge transmission and intellectual heritage preservation. He also highlighted the unique role of the photothèque (photographic archive) of the Oriental Library that contains thousands of images taken by Jesuits, documenting the history of Lebanon and the Middle East. Finally, he emphasized the importance of the Oriental Library in Lebanon’s intellectual success and its role in the cultural and academic development of the country.

The ceremony was an opportunity to launch several significant projects, including the Signing of the Acquisition Agreement for the Levon Nordiguian photographic collection, which added 63,000 new photographs to the Oriental Library’s collection. Mr Gilbert Hage, photograph and advisor to the photothèque, also announced the reopening of the Jesuit Photography Museum, a key initiative for the preservation of the photographic heritage.

Awarded by the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission, this label recognizes the excellent quality of the program, that prepares students to meet the demands and tackle the challenges of the 21st-century job market, and even to access the higher echelons of international organizations.

Ranked 6th out of 81 candidates, ETIB distinguished itself by successfully adapting its program and teaching methods to the evolving demands of the translation market, and finding a balance between human expertise and artificial intelligence.

During the solemn certificate ceremony, ETIB received a warm round of applause from representatives of the 81 European Master's in Translation programs, since it is the only institution, in Lebanon and the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP), to be included in the list of EMT member countries since 2019, and because it stands as a bastion of intellectual and academic resilience.

Dr Charbel Chalouhi (FM, 2010), a urologic surgeon, performed the first kidney auto transplant using robotic surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. During the procedure, the patient’s left kidney was removed and was retransplanted and repositioned. The 11-hour surgery allowed the patient to leave the hospital four days later, resuming a normal life, free of complications.

Charbel Chalouhi obtained a Medical Doctor Diploma from the Faculty of Medicine of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) in 2010, followed by a Specialization Diploma in Urology from the same faculty in 2014. He then specialized in robotic surgery at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. To top it all, he earned a Master in Biological and Medical Sciences - concentration: Physiology and Physiopathology in 2021 from the USJ Faculty of Medicine.

Charbel decided to return to Lebanon in 2017, encouraged to come back by his father, who is also a doctor and founder of the field of Urology in Lebanon, and began practicing at HDF as a transplant surgeon. In 2019, the Montefiore-Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York asked him to join its robotic transplantation project. Since then, he has traveled there every five weeks, achieving a groundbreaking milestone that became the cornerstone of the program. Additionally, Charbel serves as a lecturer and international coordinator at USJ.
