Students of the Faculty of Law and Political Science of USJ Win the International Private Law Competition in ParisThe first prize of the International Private Law Competition in Paris, which took place in the Marie-Antoinette Hall of the French Court of Cassation on September 30, was awarded to three master’s students in Law from Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ): Michael Sakr, Camille Fayad and Malek el-Khalil. Centered around handling a case of international litigation involving conflicts of jurisdiction and laws, the competition focused on the issue of the recognition, in France, of a judgment rendered in Lebanon concerning a fictional case. The competition gave the students a chance to put into practice all the skills they acquired during their bachelor degree, such as the ability to argue, the ability to synthesize, eloquence and the power of conviction. Marie-Claude Najm, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science (FDSP) and professor of international private law at USJ, emphasizes: “For the Faculty of Law, this victory is a testament to the high-quality education that our students receive, which has allowed one of our teams to secure the first place against important teams of prestigious Parisian universities of excellent performance.” Malek el-Khalil considers that “such victory would not have been possible without the harmony and unity of the team.” As Lebanon plunges into a war with disastrous consequences, winning the first place in this competition is of particular significance. “It makes me proud. I hope that this victory proves, to other countries, the resilience of the Lebanese people and our ability to work hard, despite the circumstances.” says Camille Fayad. Moreover, Michael Sakr states that “this victory represents our ability to excel despite all challenges. It shows that the Lebanese people can shine internationally.” Jana AOUAD | Director of the Student Information and Orientation Office of USJ Dear Students, I know that you have faced incredibly difficult times, as we all have, but you have already demonstrated extraordinary courage. Now, it is time to channel that strength into building dreams and creating new possibilities. Each day presents a fresh opportunity to grow and become the best version of yourself. Be assured, our University aspires to be a place where we can rebuild, understand, and reimagine our world. The choice of the field of study you make is, indeed, a very crucial one, so bear in mind that choosing the ‘right major’ is also the outcome of a well-informed candidate. Throughout the period of reflection, do not hesitate to ask questions. Asking for assistance is far better than feeling lost or confused. Create a ‘blacklist’ of everything you do not like. This way of thinking ‘in reverse’ might help you get closer to the major that matches your aspirations. Never compare yourself with others. Each individual follows their own path and grows at a difference pace. Do not forget that the choice of major is, primarily, a journey of self-discovery. Time, money and geography should not limit you. When you’re motivated and convinced by a project, it’s easy to find solutions. Rest assured that it is never too late to redirect your path and be open to other majors in order to lead a life and a career that suit you best! We are always by your side to listen to you, guide you and help you choose the right major. For any help in the decision-making process, do not hesitate to check our virtual orientation website (usj.edu.lb/e-doors) or to contact the SIO for a free and personalized orientation session. Hoping to meet you soon at USJ!
The young economist and French-speaking stand-up comedian is inspired by true stories from his life for his sketches. John explains: “I draw all my inspirations from my day-to-day life. I do not invent anything on stage. Stand-up, for me, is an art that shows, through good humor, one’s vulnerabilities and fragility.” It all started in 2011. While he was responsible for a group of young scouts, John held his first stand-up comedy show at a booth to raise money for a trip to Turkey. Encouraged by his family and friends to become a comedian, John followed many workshops, one of which was a clowning workshop, provided at USJ, where he was, at the time, a third-year student in Economics at the USJ Faculty of Economics. In 2017, he took the stage of the Beirut Open Space at Mar Mikhaël for the first time, and continued his journey with Awkword, the first platform for stand-up comedy in Lebanon, where the KED theater saw the light in Karantina, Beirut. In 2011, John Achkar obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Faculty of Economics of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ). Then, in 2014, he graduated with a master’s degree in History – International Relations from the Faculty of Humanities (FLSH) of USJ. He earned a second master’s degree in Business Administration from the Singapore Management University in 2017, while also taking training courses in management at the IE Business School in Madrid. Professionally, John works with various international organizations in Lebanon such as The Danish Refugee Council, Search for Common Ground, DAI and also Tamayyaz. In 2015, he transformed his mother's bookstore and founded Everythink, a concept store that creates board games. Testimonial taken from the website: Alumni USJ
