Citizen Café: Citizen Engagement for Responsible Municipal Elections

On 10 March 2016, the Diane Foundation, in collaboration with the CSEC, organized a Citizen Coffee on the theme of municipal elections in Lebanon.

The «Citizen Café» of the «Diane Foundation» are citizens' meetings that invite experts to share their knowledge on a current issue, which provides the basis for discussions with all the citizens present. In addressing the issue of municipal elections, this Citizen Café was intended to raise awareness about the issues of municipal elections and voting. One hundred participants gathered in the cafeteria of the Social Sciences and Humanities Campus of Saint Joseph University around a panel of experts from the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS), the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE), BALDATI BE'ATI (a AUB programme) and local development agents. Their interventions focused on the powers of municipalities and their role in the implementation of sustainable development strategies in their territory. Representatives of the municipalities of Antoura, Chahtoul, Rachana and Roumieh also reported on their good practices in this area.

To testify to the involvement of artists and youth on the major issues affecting Lebanon, pop singer Xriss Jor interpreted her cover of the Michael Jackson tube «Care about us» that it carried out in the summer of 2015 to support civil protest movements in the context of the waste crisis.

Citizen Café: L’engagement citoyen pour des élections municipales responsables

Le 10 mars 2016, « fondation diane », en collaboration avec la CEECDD, a organisé un Citizen Café sur le thème des élections municipales au Liban.

Les « Citizen Café » de « fondation diane » sont des réunions citoyennes qui convient des experts à exposer leurs connaissances sur une problématique d’actualité, interventions qui posent les bases pour des débats avec l’ensemble des citoyens présents. En abordant la question des élections municipales, ce Citizen Café visait à sensibiliser l’auditoire sur les enjeux de ces élections et du vote. Une centaine de participants se sont ainsi réunis à la cafétéria du Campus des sciences humaines de l’Université Saint-Joseph autour d’un panel d’experts émanant du Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS), de la Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE), de BALDATI BI’ATI (un programme de l’AUB) ainsi que des agents de développement local. Leurs interventions ont porté sur les pouvoirs des municipalités et leur rôle dans la mise en place de stratégies de Développement Durable dans leur territoire. Des représentants des municipalités d’Antoura, Chahtoul, Rachana et Roumieh ont également fait état de leurs bonnes pratiques en la matière.

Pour témoigner de l’implication des artistes et de la jeunesse sur les grandes problématiques qui touchent le Liban, la chanteuse pop Xriss Jor a interprété sa reprise du tube de Michael Jackson « Care about us » qu’elle a réalisée à l’été 2015 pour soutenir les mouvements de protestation civile dans le contexte de la crise des déchets.
