The South Lebanon Campus (CLS) of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) officially launched its activities in celebration of the University’s 150th anniversary. The event gathered partners, friends, and the winners of the South Lebanon and Chouf Heritage Competition. Notable attendees included MP Bahia Hariri, USJ Rector Prof. Salim Daccache, SJ, CLS Director Prof. Dina Sidani, local officials, religious leaders, civil society figures, and directors of partner schools in the region.

Prof. Daccache welcomed the attendees, acknowledging both the joy of the occasion and the sorrow caused by the tragic events in the South. “It is a pleasure to come together once again, though this moment is bittersweet given the suffering inflicted by Israeli forces on our beloved South—a region defined by resilience and hope,” he stated. He further emphasized the importance of partnering with local schools, noting, “This collaboration is a cornerstone of our commitment to nurturing Lebanon’s brightest scientific minds and enhancing the quality of education nationwide.”

“We firmly believe that education is the key to a brighter future, and that collaboration is essential to achieving this vision. Through our collective efforts, we can create an environment that inspires and empowers the next generation, as history has consistently shown,” the Rector affirmed. Acknowledging the challenges facing the education sector, he described them as “valuable opportunities for innovation and growth,” emphasizing the University’s dedication not only to academic excellence but also to shaping responsible, engaged citizens. “We believe education must go beyond knowledge transfer to instill civic and ethical values,” he added. He concluded by expressing his heartfelt gratitude to “everyone who contributed to making this gathering possible—education enthusiasts and professionals alike.”

Prof. Sidani welcomed attendees, describing the event as a valuable opportunity for dialogue and reflection. She continued, “This event offers a unique opportunity not only to brief you on the latest developments at the USJ South Lebanon Campus but also to highlight key strategic decisions taken by our Rector. These decisions, rooted in our unwavering commitment to regional solidarity, are already making a profound and positive impact on our students’ lives.”

She also expressed her gratitude to the Rector for his steadfast support and dedication to addressing the specific needs of CLS students. “Moreover,” Sidani added, “I have been deeply moved, even impressed, by the attitude of our students. Confronted with uncertainty and daunting challenges, they made a conscious decision to persevere. Through their resilience, their determination to overcome obstacles, and their commitment to progress—despite the trials of war—they have demonstrated extraordinary adaptability while maintaining their optimism.”

She highlighted the impact of recent decisions across all levels, particularly in strengthening partnerships with educational institutions and establishing synergies that benefit both the youth and the region. These initiatives offer targeted benefits for both students and instructors, reinforcing the commitment to cultivating future leaders through the support of distinguished students.

MP Bahia Hariri then underscored USJ’s pivotal role in societal advancement, highlighting its transformative impact on community development through the achievements of its alumni. She stated, “For 150 years, USJ has reinforced the pillars of national and social collaboration, significantly empowering the Lebanese community to overcome challenges. President Rafic Hariri consistently championed a strong dialogue and enduring partnership with the esteemed Saint Joseph University, investing in its expertise to advance Lebanon and nurture the leaders of tomorrow.”

She continued, “On USJ’s 150th anniversary, and on behalf of the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, I extend my warmest congratulations to Professor Salim Daccache and the entire administrative and academic team. I also wish to express my deepest appreciation, respect, and gratitude for unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions to our cherished Lebanon over these 150 remarkable years.”

Profs. Daccache and Sidani then presented MP Hariri with an honorary shield in recognition of her educational contributions and her pivotal role in the development of southern Lebanon in education and culture.

To express their deep gratitude, they also awarded USJ’s 150th anniversary medal to those whose exceptional contributions made this collaboration a success:
