During President Emmanuel Macron’s much-anticipated visit to Lebanon, around twenty students from the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) had the extraordinary privilege of taking part in official events organized by the French Embassy in Lebanon. This initiative, led by the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations (VRRI) in collaboration with USJ’s deans and directors, brought together students from various disciplines at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
A Moment of Reflection in Gemmayzeh
One of the most moving highlights of the visit was the President’s emotionally charged tour of Gemmayzeh, a neighborhood still bearing the deep scars of the devastating August 4, 2020 explosion. Macron had visited the site immediately after the tragedy as a gesture of solidarity with the Lebanese people. During his visit, he met with several NGOs and the International Red Cross. In a powerful and symbolic moment, he engaged with USJ students who had gathered to meet him, sharing a warm and friendly exchange captured in memorable photos. A particularly touching moment was his private meeting with survivors of the explosion, reaffirming his unwavering support and France’s deep-rooted commitment to Lebanon.
A Prestigious Reception at the Pine Residence
The visit’s second highlight was a grand reception at the Pine Residence, where USJ students had the distinct honor of being invited. In a speech filled with warmth and optimism, President Macron reiterated France’s steadfast support for Lebanon, highlighting the promises and potential of the country’s emerging political landscape.
An Unforgettable Experience, in the Words of Our Students
Testimony of Sally Nasr, Faculty of Humanities
This was an unforgettable experience that gave us, as students, the unique opportunity to engage directly with the President on the recent political changes in Lebanon and the role France could play in shaping its future. We also had the privilege of speaking with prominent figures such as Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Special Envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian, and Rima Abdul-Malak, former French Minister of Culture. Representing USJ at such an event was a profound and enriching experience, marking a new era for Lebanon – one filled with hope for renewal and reform.
