The Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) will participate in the ninth edition of the World Interuniversity Championships, set to take place in Rome, Italy, from November 7 to 10, 2024.
This prestigious event gathers 94 universities from 30 countries, bringing together around 4,000 university athletes. In an act of solidarity and sportsmanship, each delegation will raise their national flag during the opening ceremony. Despite the significant challenges Lebanon is currently facing, USJ is honored to represent the country and to carry its flag on the international stage.
USJ’s delegation includes the women’s futsal team, reigning Lebanese champions and fourth-place finishers at the previous Games held in Paris in 2023. They will be joined by swimmer Marc Fares, the Lebanese university champion, and tennis player Serena Khoury, who recently USJ from Notre-Dame de Jamhour School.
Maroun Khoury, USJ’s Athletics Director, expressed the university’s commitment to the competition: “Although we had hoped to participate with a larger number of athletes and in different disciplines, the obstacles due to the national situation and travel challenges have in no way diminished our determination. Carrying the Lebanese flag among the flags of nations around the world is, for us, a powerful expression of resilience, hope, and faith in a brighter future. We will give our all to bring home a medal, even if the task is challenging.”
