This TU is aiming at presenting to Bachelor’s student in SLT (Year 4), different type of dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment, as well as the cognitive communication changes for people living with dementia or MCI. We would cover the basics of dementia and neurodegenerative disorders, including the most common types and their symptoms. We would then explore the impact of these disorders on communication, swallowing, and social interactions, and discuss various assessment and intervention strategies that speech therapists can use to address these issues. We would also touch on ethical and legal considerations that may arise when working with patients with dementia, and emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment. Overall, this presentation would provide speech therapy students with a comprehensive overview of the key concepts and skills they need to effectively work with patients with dementia and neurodegenerative disorders. This TU will address directly both assessment and therapies/ education methods used in SLT and family guidance.
