Each year, the Human Rights looks into one or two themes, that students explore first theoretically and critically during the first semester, then through the eyes of practitioners during the semester. This year, the course will tackle War Memory during the first semester and the Missing and the Forcefully Disappeared during the second semester. Societies who have witnessed war and civil war have an ambiguous relationship to memory. In order to avoid reopening barely healed wounds, should we forget and amnesty? Or should we relentlessly investigate and analyse to draw lessons from the past? Shouldn’t we tirelessly do our best to bring justice to the victims in order to complete the mourning process and begin the work of reconstruction on a healthy basis of a lasting national identity? The war in Lebanon (1975-1990) ended 30 years ago and now we are witnessing the greatest collapse in its history. The country became an exceptional real-time laboratory that must be questioned urgently. The future is a present that the past gives us. (André Malraux)
