Northern Lights
Northern Lights is an a cappella concert exploring themes of wonder, human connection, and the enduring beauty that can be found even in our darkest times. There is a profound sense of wonder in this purely vocal performance, which demands that we create an entire universe out of nothing but thin air, silence, and shared breath.
The heart of this program is anchored around Kim André Arnesen’s Even When He Is Silent—a work that beautifully reminds us that light exists even when we cannot see it. Holding on to that truth, we explore pieces within that same realm, seeking light as hope, light as color, and light as an endless universe of sound. This exploration takes us from the brilliant, soaring imagination of Leonardo da Vinci dreaming of flight in Eric Whitacre’s masterpiece, to the quiet, haunting stillness of Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry. You will hear the crisp, cold snap of Seán Doherty’s Snow Dance for the Dead, and, of course, the breathtaking, shimmering colors of Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Northern Lights.
But Northern Lights is also about perspective—about choosing to look up at the sky and see the world differently, even when the ground beneath us feels unstable. In the second half of our program, we shift into contemporary sounds that explore those exact same themes of memory, resilience, and hope. From the nostalgic beauty of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, to the explosive and triumphant energy of Never Enough, and the healing comfort of Coldplay’s Fix You, these songs serve as a final, powerful reminder of the light we ultimately find in each other.
Through this shared breath, we invite you to explore with us the delicate interplay between “light” and “darkness.”
